The best islands to visit in Greece, taken by sheer popularity, appear to be Santorini, Mykonos and Crete. But without a doubt, any time you talk about “the best”, you are moving into subjective opinion here. Thus it really is determined by what you would like, what you are looking for, and your personal tastes. Although these Greek islands may be the most popular, it does not always mean that they will be your personal favourites.
Greece has as many as 1,400 islands, with 227 of them inhabited. Less than 80 of them have more than one-hundred people. So you have got a lot of choice.
Will you like well-developed tourist places or out of the way spots? Might you prefer ancient history or happening hotspots? Different islands cater for different tastes.
Most of the Greek islands are actually in the Aegean Sea (between Greece and Turkey), although there are also some in the Ionian Sea, on the Italian facing side of Greece. To get to the Aegean Islands, it is usual that you go from Athens. That is the traditional vacationer’s itinerary. If you have just one chance to visit the Greek islands, this may be your best bet.
Mykonos (which is near to Athens) can be expensive for some. This is particularly so if you book your stay at one of the more popular hotels. However if you simply stay beyond the villages, it is much more affordable.
Visitors commonly have the most amazing things to say about Crete (between North Africa and Greece). Crete’s North coast is the more tourist-oriented part of the island. The South Coast, however, has beautiful beaches which you can often have all to yourself, once you are away from the hotels and villages.
Santorini (north of Crete) is very touristy, and very popular. That is great for most people, because it provides bascially everything an average tourist wants and needs.
Other than these very popular places, Paros-Naxos (north of Santorini, and more towards the mainland) can give you one of the most affordable vacations, and comes with beautiful beaches, historical monuments, great architecture, and camping.
In the Ionian Sea, Corfu is the most popular island. There are lots of restaurants, beaches, bars, clubs, and culture.
Also in the Ionian Sea is the very beautiful island of Lefkada, again with fantastic beaches, excellent food, lots of things to do for tourists, and at very affordable prices. There is also a bridge that connects the island to the mainland, so you can rent an automobile and go between both places.
If you’ve gone to Greece before, try out some of these other places, and then you can decide for yourself which are the best islands to visit in Greece. On the other hand, if you are going to Greece for the first time, the best idea probably is to visit Santorini and the other beautiful islands of the Aegean.
